Fossilized Fern on shale, with crisp white and silvery fossils of several different kinds of ferns and leaves (not just imprints!). Both sides have nice sampling, and edges of the plate show fossils between the different layers as well. Click on the picture or the links below for extra-large close-ups showing all the details.

Mineral information:
What's the mineral connection here, you say? Aren't fossils a different category? Well, yes they are. However, these ferns are preserved in a mineral called Pyrophillite (a pseudomorph of Pyrite), which also gives them the silvery-white color. I believe (based on some research) that some of the ferns present on this specimen are Alethopteris sp., Pecopteris hemiteliodes, Neuropteris, Sphenophyllum... but don't take my word for it. I'm no botanist, and you may just enjoy the discovery quest!
