Gemstone information:
Amethyst is a variety of Quartz that gets its color from the presence of iron impurities. While most Amethyst found worldwide is so light it is almost colorless, some of it is of such specific color that professionals can identify the location by the stone. For example, a mine in Zambia produced a much-valued Amethyst that was a deep purple with dark blue "zones" that gave it a velvety quality. Thunder Bay in Canada is known for Amethyst with red hematite inclusions which give it a reddish hue.
